11/12/2008 - Petition for Equal Access to Music Education

MENC has written the "Petition for Equal Access to Music Education" as a national advocacy campaign to spotlight the importance of music education. We are asking anyone who would like to participate to print and distribute petitions among family, friends, at concerts, sporting events, in your classrooms, retail outlets, and in your neighborhood. Please send the original signed petitions back to MENC and check back often, as we will be posting more information about the petition drive and related events.

11/12/2008 - Election Impact on the Arts Webinar

Americans for the Arts invites MENC members to participate at no cost in their November 20 webinar "Election Impact on the Arts." Americans for the Arts government affairs staff will provide a detailed analysis of the presidential, congressional, and state and local elections and ballot initiatives. They will be joined by national arts leaders and elected officials including Congressional Arts Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY), Massachusetts State Senator and President Pro Tem Stan Rosenberg, and actress Kerry Washington. 
E-mail Hannah Sharp to receive the code for free participation, then visit Americans for the Arts to register.

Keep Arts in Schools is hosting a free webinar on Thursday, November 20 at 3:00pm entitled “Building Enduring Partnerships between School Districts and Arts Advocates.” The webinar is free and the final for 2008.

11/6/2008 - President-elect Barack Obama’s Plan for the Arts

President-elect Obama and Vice President-elect Biden have outlined a plan for the arts in their upcoming term. The plan outlines reinvesting in arts education including, expanding partnerships with arts organizations and schools, creating an Artist Corps and supporting the importance of arts education.

11/3/2008 - The Presidential Candidates Arts Education Positions

On October 24, 2008, in a Town Hall meeting with Dan Rather at the 52nd Annual Fall Conference of the Council of the Great City Schools in Houston, TX, education advisers to the McCain presidential campaign and the Obama presidential campaign discussed their candidates' positions on arts education.

10/28/2008 - U.S. Secretary of Education Announces Final Regulations to Strengthen No Child Left Behind

On October 28, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings addressed a group of educators, policymakers and business leaders in Columbia, SC and announced final regulations to strengthen and clarify No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The regulations focus on improving accountability, transparency, graduations rates and public school choice.

9/22/2008 - Americans for the Arts Action Fund PAC Issues Congressional Report Card on the Arts

The Americans for the Arts Action Fund PAC has released its Congressional Arts Report Card, covering the members of the 110th Congress (2007–2009). The Report Card contains letter grades and numerical scores of every member of Congress based on his or her voting record on arts issues.
